Coast Guard Rescue 30 y.o. With Kidney Stones

62 Miles West of San Diego

On April 17th, 2015, a request for assistance was sent to the U.S. Coast Guard San Diego Sector from a small pleasure boat. The skipper of the Intimidator, a 32 foot, open cockpit pleasure boat, requested a medical evacuation.  

It was 3:22 in the afternoon and the Coast Guard was soon on site.  While there are some technical aspects to this kind of rescue, the Helicopter crew made the feat seem like it was just another day at the office.

At time of press, there was no word on the condition of the victim or the actual cause of his distress, other than suspected kidney stones.

Continuum Finds Nirvana Now In Yacht Rescue

ALAMEDA, Calif. — A pair of good Samaritan sail vessels located a sailboat in distress with two Canadian crew members aboard nearly 2,000 miles west southwest of the Galapagos Islands Wednesday.

At 10:24 p.m. Tuesday watch standers at the 11th Coast Guard District Command Center received notification from a ham radio operator that the 42-foot sail vessel Nirvana Now was disabled and became unstable. 

The 11th District sent a safety net message to all vessels in the area to render assistance. After receiving the safety net message, the sailboat Athos of London transited toward the Nirvana Now. The Nirvana Now reportedly has a registered emergency position-indicating radio beacon and a four-man life raft on board.

Two lives in being were aboard the Nirvana, Randy and Dawn Ortiz.  Randy is a retired marine engineer and Dawn is a retired nurse. 

The Continuum

The crews aboard two sailboats, the Athos of London and the Continuum, responded to the safetynet. The Continuum was part of the Puddle Jump send off party in  earlier this year.  At the helm were Bob and Mona Jankowski from North Carolina.  

The Continuum arrived on scene first.  Bob and Mona transferred Randy and Dawn from the Nirvana Now to the Continuum.  

Before leaving their beloved yacht, Randy and Dawn cut the cables opening the sea cocks and sending thier beloved yacht to meet Davey Jones.  As responsible mariners, they did not want the boat to be a hazzard to others.  Both reported no injuries or medical concerns. The Continuum will transport the two to Hiva-Oa in the Marquesas Islands.

En route to Hiv-Oa, the Athos of London will rendezvous with the Continuum to pass along any extra food and water the crew and two Canadian crew members may need.

“The rescue of the two sailors on the Nirvana Now is a testament to the dedication of our Coast Guard watch standers, our international partners and the good Samaritans who responded to our alert,” said Lt. Cmdr. Andrea Sacchetti, 11th District Response and Incident Management. “When mariners are in distress so far from any Coast Guard or other rescue service assets, we rely heavily on these resources to respond; we are grateful we had such capable vessels as the Continuum and the Athos of London to assist.”

The alert went out on boatwatch and a variety of cruising and sailing websites and sailing threads:  Tom Kardos and his experimental 40 foot yacht, Seven Sisters, was overdue for it's planned November 9th, arrival date in Acapulco.

CLOSED:  On November 23, 2014, a passing M/V sighted and reported the S/Y Seven Sisters, disabled, one outrigger broken, no crew aboard.  No sighting of the kayak or the inflatable that were reported to be aboard.  Position: (11°-29.0 N x 102°-16.0 W).

Tonight we hear the mixed blessings, the yacht has been found, but not her crew, Tom Kardos.  At least, this is not another missing-without-a-trace story, like the Nina and the Lady Domina.  However, finding the boat without the crew suggests a difficult scenario.

Clearly, common advice is to stay with the wreck if at all possible.  It appears as if Tom survived a capsizing of the Seven Sisters and had erected temporary shelter, although, that is speculation.  It is unknown whether the kayak or inflatable that were lashed to the deck of the Seven Sisters survived the capsizing, or whether, for unknown reasons, Tom managed to board one of them.  

Our hearts are with Tom's family and friends.

Tom gained fame early in life by landing his hang glider on the 10 yard line at Berkeley's Memorial Stadium on October 27th, 1979, upstaging the Cal-USC football game, and the Cal quarterback who ducked under the right wing.

SV Simplicity Overdue From Wilmington DE to Ft. Pierce, FL. Please Advise

THIS BOAT HAS BEEN FOUND, ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT REPORTS.

Photo is of the SV Simplicity which was for sale through
the Multihullcompany.  It is a Francis 48.  It may or may
not be the boat which has been reported missing.

If you have any information about the SV Simplicity, please advise the Coast Guard IMMEDIATELY.  This boat is long over due and look-outs have seen nothing of her. 

The following message was received from Glenn Tuttle, the Cruisers Network:

USCG Wilmington, and USCG Norfolk have issued a lookout for the S/V Simplicity, a 47.5 sailing catamaran. It is a 2003 St. Francis catamaran , US flagged, and skippered by Capt. Ralph Hendry. POB: unknown. Registered Home Port: Wilmington, DE. They have EPIRB, VHF, and HF and a rib dinghy.


They were last heard from in the area of 42 mi. offshore of Wilmington on Nov. 5th. They were going from Hampton, to Ft. Pierce, FL, and are now declared overdue by the USCG. There could be as many as 5 POB, but this is taken from a year old float plan


This information was verified with the USCG as of 0645 hrs EST, Monday, 10 Nov.

We have a petition drive in process to ask the Department of State to take a leadership role in finding the sailors aboard the Nina, a 1928 schooner that disappeared on June 4th, 2013. 

 The families, through their search advisor, Texas Equusearch, asked the Coast Guard for help, but the effort was blocked by the Department of State. The DoS sent the families to an office in the Department of State which helps relatives make FINAL ARRANGEMENTS for Americans who go missing overseas.

We feel it is inappropriate for the Department of State to advocate for final arrangements while an active search is in progress. The family asks the Department of State, and John Kerry, to take a leadership role in finding the missing sailors aboard the Nina.

Nothing says they sunk-- there is NOTHING saying that, until there is they should be searched for! Their lives have value.. If it was your family missing you would be looking. This is important to me because I am a Mom and if it was my child lost out there I would do everything humanly possible to bring them home. Not knowing is the worst nightmare imaginable.

These family members need to know, and there is a chance the crew members are alive somewhere needing help.

I went to school with David and Cheri (his twin) in the Florida Keys. All of us want to be able to bring all 7 on board home alive. How dare the government not want to help find its own citizens. They have paid into you too! We have been raising money to have searches go out and help find them. Why can't you help too! If they were your children I bet you would do everything possible and not give up. So please help.

Danielle Wright is related to my brother in law and I would love to see her re-united with her loving and caring family. Her mother is the sweetest person I have ever met and so are her grand parents.

Rescue At Sea, 1 Critical

August 23rd, 2013-Shortly after first light, rescuers were scrambled to rescue a fishing boat in hot water and cold seas.  The 30 foot boat had lost it's engine and was bashing against the rocks, near the English town of Blythe, Northumberland.

Two of the fishermen scrambled to shore.  However, a third man was stuck in the surf as a massive swell slapped him against the rocks.

The coastguard was unable to lift a stretcher up the steep rocks.  As a result, they brought in a rescue helicopter, which saved the man and saved the day.
